Appearance Tips
Here's some tips on how to make your wearable easier to use, especially
in low-color (such as the 64-color MicroOptical SV-3) environments.
Fonts
- The neep font is quite legible. Apt-get install
xfonts-jmk and then start your xterms with -fn
"-jmk-neep-bold-r-normal-*-*-140-*-*-c-*-iso8859-15". At 640x480, you
can specify 30 lines and it (at least on WindowMaker) will take up the
whole screen. On the MicroOptical SV-3, it may be necessary to specify
79 columns rather than 80, since it seems to cut off the rightmost few
pixels. Here's a screenshot.
Colors
- To make life easier, you can run a VNC server
on your wearable (say on display :9) and then connect your
wearable's X session to that. This allows you to have remote
control on a desktop if you want it. It takes a little fiddling,
though, when using the SV-3 to get the colors to look right. Run
the VNC server with "-pixelformat rgb222 -depth 8"; on the SV-3,
this will produce acceptable dithering: original, dithered and a close match in colors between
the SV-3's VNC and a TrueColor desktop's VNC. Running the VNC
server with "-pixelformat rgb222 -depth 16" will produce a
non-dithered color block appearance:
original, dithered. Also compare this original image with dithering at 8 bits and dithering at 16 bits.
- Here is a
WindowMaker theme that looks decent on the MicroOptical SV-3. And
everyone loves screenshots! To install,
untar the file in ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/Themes . The theme
should be immediately available on your Themes menu. More fun
WindowMaker Theme info is available here.
