Gesture Panel: Gesture Recognition in Automobiles



The Gesture Panel is a system designed to provide an effective interface to control devices in the automobile which doesn't require the driver to divert his or her attention from the road.

Motivation

In the US in 1994, there were over forty thousand fatalities due to automobile accidents and over five billion non-fatal injuries; resulting in over $150 billion in damage, (nearly $14 B of which came from taxpayers). 56% of these accidents were categorized as having been caused by "interior distractions" (52% radio, etc).

Help reduce demands on visual attention by interacting with:
  • Cell phones
  • Radio
