Onboard Sound via the ES1938s

es1938s
What you need:
The alsa drivers, libraries and utilities from www.alsa-project.org. RC1 used for this document.
Kernel level support for sound:
CONFIG_PNP
CONFIG_ISAPNP
CONFIG_SOUND
What you do:
Compile each of the alsa packages; in order. You may also want to pass the "--with-cards=es1938" option to configure in the driver set.

Run the "snddevices" script in the drivers directory; this ensures you have the correct dev entries.

Edit /etc/modules.conf to add the following entries:
alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias snd-card-0 snd-es1938
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
Run "alsamixer" and set the sound levels that you want; "alsactl store" will save them.
Notes:
The kernel esssolo1.o driver may work; testing hasn't shown it to be reliable, however.
